What is the solution? Long-term, of course, the only solution is to replace the ideas which are the foundation of the drift to statism--in particular, replacing pragmatism with reason and altruism with rational egoism.
What intrigues me most, though, is what the "mechanism" of change will be. By that I mean what sort of intermediate and mediating events will have to happen before the drift's direction is reversed? E.g., will there need to be a growth in the proper ideas in our society _and_ a collapse of one or more major statist programs (or even the economy as a whole)?
I don't know. I am not even aware of historical precedents. Perhaps enlightened historians could suggest an answer.
